Hi everyone - this is a very short and sweet Substack today. I’ll get right to the point - I’m so excited to share that one of my essays will be published in the Globe and Mail this week!
For those who aren’t Canadian or may not know, the Globe is the most-read newspaper in Canada. I submitted one of my essays to their First Person column in January, and heard back from them a few weeks ago they’d like to publish it.
You can read my essay in the Globe and Mail here, and it will be available in print tomorrow, Friday, March 28. (Sidebar: I’ve been running in and out of a lot of places over the past few weeks seeing who still sells newspapers.)
It’s one of my favourite essays (and the one that was the easiest and most fun to write) that I’ve written so far: The Anatomy of a Work Bestie. It’s so serendipitous that today I’m meeting up with two of my work besties for dinner (both mentioned in the essay)! You can read the original piece below, and there have been some tweaks/additions to the one being published in the Globe:

I wish I remembered the context of this conversation, but sometime last year my mom was talking about something and mentioned her ‘life partner’. I immediately asked, “Aunt Linda?”. Not my dad, who my mom has been married to for 35 years, (who are life partners in the truest sense), but my mind immediately went to my mom’s best friend she met at work 36…
This is a very exciting milestone for a writer, so thank you all, always, for reading :)
Until next week,
Rachael
